Society Attends Dayton Radio Convention 08
The Dayton Convention was held May 16, 17, and 18. Our booth was #309, again in the Silver Arena. We'll file a more complete report in the July issue of the society newsletter. Just for grins, here's a bit of info and pictures, just to give you a flavour. Sign up for next year; you'll love it. While we expected attendance to be down - due to gas prices - numbers seemed about the same as last year, with lots on enthusiasm! A fifth forum room was added too. Gas in Dayton was $ 3.95, in Kansas City $3.58!
As noted in the picture at right, Sir Bento (UT ! ), Sir Tate (UK), and Sir Petersen (WA) assist the Queen Mum Pat (KS) in inspecting a tuning coil found in the flea market. Picture two displays the variometer installed in one end. The set looked very old but we have no further information. The owner of this $15 flea market purchase carried it off proudly. Perhaps we'll hear more on it later.

A vendor brought by a whole box of flat ferrite bars. We nicknamed them the Dayton Ferrites. We were told the material is comparable to 61. We've posted them on the Specials page two for five bucks for as long as they last. No guarantees!
A batch of tiny glass triodes were found in the flea market and divi'd up at the booth. The picture suggests that the part is an 891B; someone said they were maybe SYL1068 (Sylvania). We'll investigate and report here and on rapntap. While round in shape, someone said they look similar to the old flat hearing aid tubes. Perhaps a little searching will expose a good part number and the characteristic curves can be identified. If so, hm, we might be able to create a few new regens! [Just in - Richard O'neill sent some notes, indicating the tube is a pentode, Sylvania 1268.]

QST Contributing Editor, H. Ward Silver, NØAX, and Joe Eisenberg, KØNEB, Kits Forum Leader, stopped by the booth for a chat. Ward was named Hamvention's 2008 'Amateur of the Year.' Joe has been the Kits Forum manager for a number of years and has included Society staff in the presentations. Phil, WØXI, introduced the XS-801 Crystal Radio Kit at this year's forum.
Mel Whitten (MO), KØPFX, at right, stopped by the booth with a friend. Mel has a long standing history in packet radio and enjoys using & testing emerging digital voice techniques.
Again, we'll post an article on the Dayton convention in the Society's July newsletter.
